46 HOSTS - 1 CITIES - 59 ACTIVITIES (AND RISING)
Joe is a very special man. He can take you for a horizontal tour of the North Island. He can talk about his projects that promote social cohesion on the island or explain how an 'orgone accumulator' works. In any case, he will give you food for thought. Joe Cillen firmly believes: 'At one time the motor vessel North Island will tear itself from its mooring place and set sail to a heavenly spot'. On the map, the North Island does indeed have the shape of a vessel. With a little fantasy you can imagine that Rotterdam is the shipyard where the Northern Island is anchored like a supertanker. Joe was born in the Belgian town of Paal - an anagram of the utopian island Pala from the novel by Aldous Huxley. In his younger years Joe lived a life full of drugs and alcohol. In that 'previous life' Cillen was a miner, delinquent, smuggler and sailor on the tramp. Later in life Cillen went to the Academy of Fine Arts. Now he's running a gallery on the ground floor of his house. Cillen's imaginative plan for the motor vessel has been a well-kept secret for a long time, only known to the approximately three thousand islanders.
